Not through lack of imagination, but rather as a reference to the Melbourne Studio of Art, which it fronts, Untitled Cafe, is a bright, friendly cafe in Elsternwick that serves Five Senses coffee, crunchy baguettes and an impressive all-day breakfast menu.
The cheerful space, located on the somewhat lonely end of GlenHuntly Road, comprises street side tables, bench seating and a communal table that's always piled with blank postcards and coloured pencils. Customers are encouraged to paint, sketch and be creative in between sips of their lattes. Black and white silent films (such as Metropolis) are projected on a white expanse of wall, filling the space with a sense of nostalgia and hinting at the creativity blooming upstairs.
The menu hits the mark by staying basic, being affordable and sourcing excellent produce. The usual suspects like avocado fetta mash, croissants and bircher are all present as well as more substantial offerings like corn and dill pikelets with smoked salmon, avocado, greens, red onion and lime mayo. Relishes, muesli and sweets are all homemade and the bread is from Phillippa’s.
Out the back, a lush courtyard complete with its own veggie patch, herb garden and mural provides a quiet retreat from the everyday hassles of life.
