Two Fat Monks
If at first you don’t succeed, try again. Two Fat Monks opened in an enormous warehouse space in December 2016 as an all-day brunch cafe, but locals were hoping for more.
The owners – the men behind the Little Sparrow cafes in Emporium and Chadstone – took notice. They relaunched with a more defined breakfast and lunch offering, and dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. It’s designed to please everyone. There are still breakfast favourites such as corn fritters and eggs, but also light salads and bruschetta at lunch, and more hefty options including 12-hour braised lamb shoulder on hummus with pita for dinner.
Coffee from Beans Alliance is by accompanied by single origins from a large in-house roaster. It sits below a fluorescent red light from a Russian nuclear reactor, sourced through Fossil Vintage around the corner.
The enormous warehouse-style space once housed Lygon Imports coffee machines and supplies. It was given a do-over by Urban Workroom, who added warm timber and a large oval-shaped bar to add some intimacy. Fractured glass at the back of the industrial space was retained, and retractable windows opening up garage-style onto the street were added in. It’s available as a function space.
Monde de Gateaux is the group’s on-site bakery, supplying Two Fat Monks with 15 different cakes, lemon tarts, pastries and vanilla slice. It’s headed by pastry chef Gad Assayag, whose CV includes Vue de Monde, Aunty Peg’s and Il Fornaio so don’t leave without dessert. Can’t choose? Order the tasting plate and you don’t have to.
