Walking into Sonido feels a bit like you've walked into a retro diner: the cafe is bustling with colourful, kitsch decor and mismatched furniture, and vinyl-spun Latin tunes are playing. After ordering a coffee, it’s easy to get distracted by this cafe's cheerful, bright blue walls – decorated with jumble sale charms – and bookshelves lined with old books, magazines and records. Ever since it opened Sonido has provided street-side sanctuary for Fitzroy locals to enjoy some simple Colombian and South American fare.

While arepas (corn bread) may not sound like your typical breakfast option, they are a staple for our South American comrades. These wholesome, fried flat-cakes come with fillings such as chorizo, eggs, beans and cheese. To drink, choose single origin coffee or a juice made from fruits you'll struggle to pronounce. The hot chocolate is a standout – a smooth, semi-sweet jug of bliss, served in its own pot replete with a wooden ladle. For the adventurous, opt to ‘add cheese’ and give the drink a true Colombian twist.

After a spot of lunch, check out the cafe's own gallery space, Chiquitica, exhibiting photography and artwork with a South American influence.
