Small Block prides itself on being a neighbourhood cafe that's kid friendly and relaxed – confirmed by the fact that you’ll be greeted cheerfully upon entry.

It’s become a bit of local folk-lore that owner Michael Hole bought the garage-style cafe after working the floor and really buying into the neighbourhood spirit – and he’s been turning out great coffee, breakfasts and lunches with a grin ever since.

The name is a bit misleading … this block ain’t so small. A couple of good-sized rooms, along with a compact sunny side courtyard, mean plenty of space for prams and weekend breakfasts with a broadsheet. Huge numbers (that look like they were from an old scoreboard) adorning the red and white walls give an arty touch to the decidedly pre-loved space, and there are old, red vinyl school chairs to match.
