Features
Self Preservation is so unassuming that you could be forgiven for thinking that the four small tables on the footpath out the front are just waylaid relics from different cafe nearby. Walk inside the fascinating retail/cafe space though, and find a dark but cool open-plan room with a central, communal dining table and an open, counter-less coffee prep area.
While many mistake Self Preservation to be a coffee stop alone, a second glance will reveal three-tiered shelves full of artwork, and glass cabinets laden with jewellery. From delicate silver craft to luscious necklaces, all the pieces are for sale and many are one-offs or vintage often from local designers.
A small menu includes biscuits or muffins as a snack with your espresso, or haloumi with bacon and eggs for a more substantial breakfast. Lunch reveals a succinct spread of salads, antipasti or a pasta dish like orecchiette with broccoli, almonds, chilli and baked ricotta. Self Preservation is licensed, so you can enjoy a glass of wine while you shop, or eat, or both.
