Poppie’s Nursery and Cafe is exactly what it says on the tin. And even though it’s right in the thick of Anglesea’s industrial area, you’d never know it: it’s a lush and calm space that’s well worth a visit.
It opened as a plant nursery over 25 years ago, when it was known as McGains Nursery and Organic Food Store. The local Klein family (who have a long background in hospitality in Anglesea) took over in 2019 and ramped up the cafe side of the business, while retaining the nursery and adding a gift shop and a grocer.
Poppie’s is a place to sit and linger, enjoying breakfast or lunch among hanging plants, vines climbing trellises, succulents, flowerpots and tranquil outdoor landscaping (there’s even a very zen little waterfall and a pond with fish).
A breakfast favourite is the smashed avocado, with herbs, lemon, grilled haloumi and hummus served on a beetroot, pomegranate and fennel toast from Melbourne’s Oliver Lane. The Poppie’s BLT is another house speciality, while vegan options include Bali Tofu: coconut rice, satay sauce, chilli jam and Asian slaw.
Pick up a pot plant – or even some mulch – on your way out, or stock up on some organic and locally-made produce from the onsite grocer.
