The Organic Food and Wine Deli Prahran
Inspired by the Queen Victoria Market’s organic produce, Jeanette Taylor set out to create a cafe built around nutritious meals. After opening the original Organic Food and Wine Deli in the CBD, Taylor expanded into this former pie shop in 2012.
Unlike the mostly vegan CBD location, Prahran has plenty to offer meat eaters. There’s ample choice for vegans and vegetarians too; as well as those on gluten-, sugar- and wheat-free diets. All food is 100 per cent organic. Rotating pies, sandwiches, salads and cakes making up most of the fare. Catering and hamper services are available.
A toy box, baby-change table and children’s menu (including icypoles, babycinos and gingerbread people) makes the spot extremely kid-friendly. A fenced playground and open park space are also only metres away.
The cafe is dedicated to making its environmental footprint as low as possible. Sugarcane packaging and certified organic bioplates, straws and paper bags are all used for takeaway. Food waste is given to the homeless, and local suppliers are used where possible to prevent unnecessary kilometres.
Design Office is behind the cafe’s clean lines. The shelves are from low-emission plantation timber and supported by recycled brass bullet shells.
Furniture is from the nearby Basile & Evans, coated in sustainable finishes. All meat is from Belmores, and Organic Empire brings the fruit and veg. Coffee is provided by Clark Street Coffee Roasters.
