My Legendary Girlfriend is a little less shiny than its Domain Road, South Yarra neighbours ... in a good way.

Drawing its name from a 1992 Pulp song, the interior is meant to align with the UK alternative music scene 20 or so years ago – the black and white Luna Park collage along the bar feels somewhat reminiscent of a nineties art installation.

The high, communal table at the front of the space offers a great view over the Botanical Gardens, and there’s more casual bar seating along the east wall. Further in, smaller tables sit close together and create a cosy atmosphere.

The menu is written up on the blackboard. The ‘Paul Cezanne’ comprises French mountain bread with roasted mushrooms and taleggio cheese, or you can keep it simple with eggs cooked how you like (eggs are green, from the foothills of the Grampians) or crumpets with Rooftop honey. Banana bread with espresso butter provides an equally pleasing breakfast or afternoon tea option after a jog around the Tan or spot of shopping next door at Turner & Lane.

My Legendary Girlfriend is ticking most of the boxes (the milk is Jonesy’s, the coffee is Allpress). They’re also selling CAPI soft drinks, which are Australian made and owned and use natural and plant-based extracts and botanicals.

For those South Yarra residents who want a bit more grunge with their eggs, this girlfriend will be long-term.
