In the window hangs a little wooden bird box – a telltale sign you've found this eclectic travel-inspired cafe. Yet despite no obvious written signage, the salvaged furniture and re-worked seventies sideboard tables are filled with loyal locals and the occasional newbie intrigued by the chaotic weekend hustle.

Relatively alone on Union Street, Little Byrd has, for a number of years, been offering a neat cafe destination to rival the notoriously quirky ones found more commonly in the northern suburbs. It features many familiar traits – miss-matched seating and stacked Bon Soy cartons – yet its individual charm comes more by the way of trinkets and origami, either lost beneath the tables or perched whimsically on shelving as decoration.

Little Byrd’s style is fluid to say the least, continually developing and changing, inspired by the tales and memories owners Jordan and Effie bring back from their annual January break. You'll generally find that the latest trip abroad becomes the latest source of inspiration, which subtly resonates through not just the decor, but the current breakfast and lunch menu as well.
