Kelso’s Sandwich Shoppe

When Jon Farrell and Brendan Kennedy opened their bar, Lulie Street Tavern, people were always asking about nearby food options. There weren’t enough of them.

The duo partnered with friend Kitty Kelso at the end of 2016 to open Kelso’s Sandwich Shoppe, a quick and affordable solution. Most items are priced between $8 and $12.

The Grilled Cheese includes mozzarella, cheddar, gruyere and parmesan butter. It’s offered with a stack of optional add-ons such as bacon, pickles and onions. The Smashed Pea is mint, lemon, feta, cucumber and alfalfa.

Then there are shakes, hot chips and beef and vegetarian burgers. Everything is made using Lievito bread.

There’s just a smidge of nostalgia inside. The walls display kitsch-y Women’s Weekly pages from various editions between 1956 and 1961, and there are some subtle Art Deco touches.

Kelso’s isn’t really a cafe, because it’s open late and there’s no table service. Or a diner, because there’s only one American thing about it: the bottomless filter from Coffee Supreme. It’s something in between.
