Elwood institution Jerry’s Milk Bar has stood proudly on Barkly Street for over four decades. Stepping into Jerry’s is a bit like visiting 1950s. You almost expect everyone to be wearing poodle skirts or varsity jumpers. The building possesses a kind of old-school charm you just can’t contrive.

Owner Andrew Harris was forced to undertake some impromptu renovations in 2011 but was adamant that the shop be restored as faithfully to the original space as possible. It was. Stepping into the renovated Jerry’s space, cherry red stools line the wooden bar in typical '50s style, while the golden pressed-tin ceiling, original signage and antique ice-cream cones still take pride of place.

Keeping with the theme, Jerry’s offers milkshakes and spiders in every flavour conceivable, while in the kitchen, chef Matthew Allen turns out some pretty decent breakfast fare including classics like the feta spinach scramble and the famous Jerry’s brekkie roll and three-stacker pancakes with berries and maple syrup.

Over the years the heritage-listed shop has retained a fiercely loyal customer base of local residents – the courtyard, complete with kids playground, is a big draw card for families.
