It’s not all about the hot chocolate. Sure, it’s serving dark Mörk cocoa in a beaker and poured over house-made fairy floss, which collapses into a sticky chocolate morass. But Hash Specialty Coffee on Hardware Street is also rocking hearty, stick-to-your-ribs dishes, such as its sunny egg, Istra chorizo, chilli and scallop all-day breakfast, served on a slice of toast by Zeally Bay Organic Bakers. There are coconut-yoghurt panna cottas beneath a veritable arbor of fresh flowers. The coffee is specially roasted for the cafe by Reverence Coffee Roasters and the single-origin options change every two weeks.

Owners Syed Mirraney and Ben Lou have clearly aimed for comfort with their fit-out, too. Local firm Solid Architects has converted the broad room into a series of discrete spaces: a mezzanine overlooking the shop; private dining pods lined with light wood; and a long share-table under a neon hashtag. A welcome respite from the crush of the CBD, Hash Specialty Coffee will no doubt suit workers in the market for some time out, or those looking to park quietly for a few idle hours. Oh, and did we mention its crazy hot chocolate…?
