Glovers Station
Menu - Mr Yum
Features
This 1930s service station was transformed into a bright and spacious cafe in 2016. The original owners quickly passed it onto Colin Neates and Marji Sheldy, two hospitality newcomers who’ve kept a good thing going. Designer Larritt-Evans (Market Lane Prahran and Therry Street) kept the fit-out sympathetic to the space’s Tudor architecture. The tables feature mortise and tenon joints, where the wood locks together in place without screws or nails. There are wool-blend tartan banquettes and herringbone tiles with a metallic sheen. Hints of copper and clean black lines give the space a polished look. The theme – clean and modern with a subtle nod to earlier times – carries right through to the menu, which includes a signature eggs Benedict – smoked ham hock, oozy poached egg, hollandaise and burnt apple sauce with pork-crackling crumb. Seasonal offerings keep the menu fresh (think sous-vide chicken salad in spring; and truffled mushroom ragu with pickled pumpkin in autumn).
Glovers serves Dukes house blend coffee, batch, pour-over and single origin, all of which change weekly. Or grab a chair in the courtyard where the petrol bowsers used to be and try one of the sodas or milkshakes whipped up by staff from house-made syrups.
