The Glass Den Neighbourhood Bar & Food
Sarge Michael remembers driving past what is now The Glass Den when he was a kid, and seeing the guards with guns in the prison towers.
It couldn’t be more different now. What was Pentridge Prison is now a socially inclusive, locally focused, bright and friendly cafe.
There's an atrium-like courtyard, which used to be the gloomy staff entrance to the prison. Michael and his co-owners repurposed 120-year-old doors from the prison into tables, and rescued light fixtures from the laundry.
Its big menu covers a couple of burgers; hotcakes; vegan “bacon” (made with soy and mushroom protein; and porridge with poached pear wild berries, orange and banana.
The Glass Den is vegan, vegetarian, kid and dog friendly. Cakes are by The Compassionate Kitchen in Sydenham. Most of the Glass Den’s suppliers are socially conscious or social-enterprise organisations.
Coffee is St ALi, there is Good Brew kombucha and a juice and smoothie menu (try the Watermelon Crush with mint, apple, lemon and watermelon).
A highlight is the iced coffee, a large ball of frozen espresso to which drinkers add their warmed milk of choice.
