Jesse Gollan saw a gap in the Bendigo coffee scene and opened Get Naked Espresso Bar in 2013. The name is inspired by the bottomless portafilters (the vessel you pack ground coffee into) he uses, which allows the barista to visually check for an even extraction.

He’s since expanded to a second location opposite the Bendigo Art Gallery on View Street – a handy pit stop for the weary art gazer.

Practicing that notion of doing one thing well, Get Naked focuses solely on coffee. It serves espresso and filter pours using Honeybird Coffee from Mount Beauty in Victoria’s alpine region. Bottled iced lattes are prepped and ready for hot days.

To sate afternoon sugar cravings, there are gluten-free salted-caramel brownies from Adelaide Hills baker, Four Seeds.

Recycled wood features prominently throughout, from the bar seating overlooking the street, to the green wall in the courtyard out the back. The space is small, serving mostly takeaways, but there are a few seats as well.

Gollan also paired up with 14 other passionate locals to open Handle Bar, an outdoor craft-beer bar and live-music space. It’s located between Get Naked and the back of Bendigo Wholefoods’ nursery, and opens Thursday to Sunday from 12pm.
