Counter was created to solve a common problem: the takeaway crowd messing up the joint. In this case, the joint being the much larger Auction Rooms across the road.
Diners there no longer have to worry about people squeezing past their table to score a latte served in cardboard. Counter sees to that, offering espresso and filter coffee in a standing-room only format.
The ever-changing chalkboard menu has similar aims. From croissants and toast to chicken sandwiches on Tivoli Road bread, everything is designed to be eaten on the run; or perhaps at one of the small parks that bookend Errol Street.
Counter and Auction rooms were added to the St Ali empire in November 2016. Original owner Andrew Kelly sold out to focus on his world-recognised coffee-roasting business, Small Batch. It’s still the bean of choice at both businesses.
