Across the road from the beautiful Sun Theatre, you'll find Cornershop, a spot that offers the sort of bustling brunch atmosphere that's commonplace in Melbourne's popular cafes.
While it can sometimes be a bit too frantic for the staff to handle, the coffee and food are worth waiting for from your vintage table and recycled wooden bench – especially on a sunny morning in the courtyard.
The kitchen is led by chef Reggie Webb, whose CV includes stints at Pope Joan, Circa The Prince and Comme. Given this experience, it's no surprise that the menu is that little bit refined. The ricotta hotcakes come with chocolate mousse, salted caramel and peanut sauce; and the thick-cut bacon steak with a beetroot and celeriac remoulade.
Later in the day you can return to find a substantial dinner menu and a respectable selection of craft beers.
Cornershop is now hiring. Find out more on Scout, Broadsheet's new employment website.
