Hole-in-the-wall cafe Clement takes coffee seriously. It takes its name from Pope Clement VIII, who popularised Melbourne’s favourite pastime in the 1500s. Clement opened in the tiny space in 2012 and like its namesake, had one mission – to get more people drinking great coffee.
Fresh, seasonal beans come from Market Lane, Small Batch or Clement itself – the latter roasted off-site at a nearby St Ali warehouse. Espresso is pulled through a natty, customised Kees van der Westen Spirit, imported from Holland and one of the first in Melbourne. Filter methods are AeroPress and plunger; and a Pony Blend made for Pony Bikes in West Melbourne is available for stovetop. Labels hope to educate; listing farm names, origin, varieties and expected flavours.
There’s also hot chocolate from local specialists Mörk and sweets to be enjoyed at street-side tables or on the go, while you wander around South Melbourne Market.
