At Cafe Cubin you’re welcomed at the door by two imposing Chinese warrior statues. It’s just one of many surprising touches throughout the light-filled front room; unique antiques, recycled objects and artwork provide ready-made conversation starters.

The cafe has an emphasis on fresh and healthy over greasy. Croissants, bagels and sourdough are the picks of the lunch options (the salmon, cream cheese and rocket bagel is a highlight), and smashed avo and eggs Benedict are favourites at breakfast. The chicken schnitzel roll is perfect for takeaway.

Coffee is by Reverence, and it has a noticeable depth and body. The milkshakes, in classic 1950s style, are served in a tall glass and kept simple, elegant and sweet.

Choose a window seat or head out the back, where dogs are welcome in a courtyard decorated with recycled materials and eclectic objects. An enclosed playpen keeps the little ones happily occupied and safely contained, all within sight of parents.

The cafe doubles as a showroom for Cubin Management, shop fit-out and interior renovation specialists, and its products and ideas pop out wherever you look. There’s no need to finish your lunch and rush off – the emphasis is on hanging around and enjoying the space as much as anything on the menu.
