Cafe Amalia is a small and classy French-style cafe in the heart of leafy Armadale, run by owner Christian Janko. As a long-time employee of the South Yarra institution, France Soir, he comes with an excellent pedigree. Entering the cafe's doors is akin to visiting a friend’s tasteful home; stained glassed window panels, high ceilings, scrubbed wooden floors, fresh flowers and wonderful aromas wafting in from the kitchen.
There is a bistro-style area up front with plush black leather seating and elegant fixtures, this leads into a corridor and two more dining rooms (including one known as "the Royal Room", for larger groups and culinary aristocrats).
The menu features a great range of options including daily specials, shared plates, quirky soups, delicious baguettes, fresh salads, a strong wine list and an even stronger coffee. The lamb shank pie is amazingly satisfying. Cafe Amalia also has cheese and wine nights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
