At the corner of Derby and Gaffney streets, you’ll find locals Claudia and Anthony Carnovale serving some seriously stacked bagels.
They’ve revamped an old butcher’s shop with a simple but schmick shopfront – walk inside and a sign on the wall reads, “Nobody puts baby in the corner”, a quote from the 1987 film, Dirty Dancing.
Be sure to expect the usual assortment of tried-and-tested toppings alongside some unexpected, yet equally delicious combos. Served on Elsternwick's Savion Bagels, you might order a classic lox, standard bacon-and-egg or alternative options including labneh and za’atar, brisket and Gruyere, and a hearty chicken katsu.
There’s also a vegan-friendly miso-mushroom option and a tempeh BLAT. For something sweet, try the cannoli-inspired ricotta and strawberry number.
On the drinks front, the Carnovales use local coffee roaster Padre, plus there’s freshly squeezed OJ, Yarra Valley-made lemonade Yumbo, and a few San Pellegrino options.
