With over 15 years under their belt, Babka shows that great bread isn’t new to Melbourne. Inspiring and training some of our key local bakers, Babka, with its rustic bread and excellent sweets, is an institution. Perhaps the main thing that changes here is that the queue keeps getting longer.
With an Eastern European influenced cafe (as the name suggests) that is constantly full, Babka offers unusual breakfast and lunch fare; traditional borscht, cream cheese blintzes, house-made pies, perfect poached eggs, the best sandwiches in Fitzroy and a lemon tart with a tang that’ll make your eyes squint. A local favourite is the egg brioche or challah – a pretty braid of soft, sweet bread. We suggest you brave the long weekend queue to get some takeaway shoo fly buns – better than their hot cross buns only because they are available all year round. No prams and no Mondays.
