James Laskie, the original owner of 30 Mill Espresso, was obsessed with coffee. So obsessed, he named the cafe after the amount of coffee that goes into each shot: 30 millilitres. Serving a specialty house blend on a Synesso Hydra, the aim is to ensure every customer leaves thinking: “That was a damn good coffee.”

That dedication continues with new owners, Monique, Tash and Michelle Moussi. The sisters were introduced to the hospitality industry at an early age. Growing up, they spent their time hanging out at their parents’ restaurants, trying not to get in the way. Now they run their own show.

The menu features Melbourne favorites such as smashed avo, but also plates up dishes influenced by the family’s Mediterranean background.

Step through the doors and you’ll be greeted by a big New York City mural that was part of the original office space the cafe took over. The site is small, but not at all uncomfortable – there’s still room to park a pram.

You can tell 30 Mill is a local favourite. It’s the sort of place where all the customers seem to know each other some way or another. There’s a mix of people rushing to grab a takeaway before their train departs Tooronga Rail Station next door, and neighbours sitting in enjoying the time to chat.
