Features
Mr Kitly is hidden above a fabric store on Sydney Road. The small shop is filled with ceramics, books, jewellery, plants and textiles from around the world, but there's a particular focus on Japan. Owner Bree Claffey lived there for five years and aims to showcase a different, more restrained side to the country, one that isn't all crowded trains, kawaii and manga.
There's a subtlety and attention to detail in the store. What at first seems to be muddle of products, including books, textiles, plants, pots and ceramics, becomes unified once you consider Claffey's vision. Being full of the things she loves and with an emphasis on the physical space, her personality is deeply embedded in this unique shop, which also doubles as a gallery.
A changing host of paintings and sculptural installations populate the space, and the big windows give a sweeping view of the street below. Visit the online store if you want to shop from home.
