Thanks Coffee and Sangas
No one’s going to be let down by Thanks Coffee & Sangas – it does exactly what it says on the tin: coffee and sandwiches.
Brother-sister duo Gus and Gisele Switala run the operation in a little shopfront next to Jewell station. Located just off the Upfield bike path, it’s conveniently fitted with a takeaway window for their more transient customers.
Inside, the clean, white interior is flecked with accents of neon yellow, pink and blue. The Switalas are ’90s kids – and it shows. Colourful motifs and retro shapes from that period pop up throughout the cafe and on its signage. Scanning the walls while you wait for your coffee feels a little bit like watching Nickelodeon during its Rugrats heyday.
The coffee is good, and cheaper than many other options in the area. But it’s the sangas that really shine. No flavours will shock or surprise you, but they will make you feel very nostalgic (just like the walls). The egg and bacon; ham, cheese and tomato; and the tuna melt are the headliners, but expect them to be joined by other rotating guest appearances. And every sandwich is sub-$15.
