Thomas Wilson lived his whole life in Brighton. He was a councillor for more than 50 years and the mayor seven times. It only seemed fitting that owners Ararat and Nick Avakian (Superrandom, Olie and Arie) name their third Brighton cafe after him.
The corner site was home to a milk bar for more than 100 years. As of 2015, it’s a 25-seater with European flair. The inside is tiled black and white, with pops of greenery among the round tables. Light brown Chesterfield sofas sit near the entrance and a painted-over fireplace in the dining area is accompanied by black bentwood chairs and caged light fittings.
The menu runs all day, meaning you can have your pork and fennel scrambled eggs or organic quinoa and brown rice porridge whenever. There’s also a range of salads and sandwiches including a minute-steak pide with caramelized onions, cheddar, Dijon mustard and rocket.
Coffee is a special blend from Cisco, made by latte art champion Nobumasa Shimoyama for the three cafes. He alternates between Superrandom and Tom Wilson. If you’re lucky, he’ll be here to pour you a masterpiece.
