Visit in the quiet season and you might not see a single one of Walhalla’s 20 permanent residents strolling the streets. They’re most likely huddled at home by the fireplace or having a chinwag at the Walhalla Lodge Hotel.

“The Wally Pub”, as it’s affectionately known, resides among the reconstructed buildings of this historic gold rush township. The quaint pub is a classic country affair, with counter meals and usual suspects among the beer selection.

Enjoy the cool alpine air along the verandah or on the lawn, where kookaburra friends might come to steal a chip or two. Alternatively, you can keep toasty inside amid vinyl chairs, historic photographs and the odd spot of taxidermy.

Meal portions come on the larger side. Burgers, steaks and parmas are served with chips and salad, and Pavlova or sticky date pudding to close. The pub is open Wednesday to Monday for lunch and dinner, but call ahead just in case.
