A picturesque destination for more than 30 years, Trentham Estate boasts a truly idyllic location on the banks of the Murray River. Sitting 15 minutes outside of Mildura, the winery produced its first vintage in 1984 from a mere six tonnes of grapes. Founders Jack and Moya Murphy and their sons Anthony and Patrick have since accumulated a slew of awards – and now process a hearty 5,000 tonnes per vintage.

Their portfolio of accessible drops includes Italian varieties including a crisp vermentino and a full-bodied nebbiolo, while shiraz, merlot, pinot noir and chardonnay are all well represented. Be sure to try their citrus-kissed take on taminga – a grape created to suit the warmer climate of the Murray Darling region. And showing real devotion to specific Australian regions, Trentham Estate’s Reserve range highlights varietals from Heathcote, Coonawarra and even Tasmania.

Since the 45-hectare property is simply too special not to share, the winery has nurtured both a popular cellar door and restaurant over the years. The latter offers alfresco dining on weekends, with expansive river views and a seasonal menu (Italian meatballs, porterhouse steak, and Peking duck breast are past highlights). There are lighter options available every day to pair with your wine sampling, whether you settle in on the balcony or stretch out across the generous lawns.
