The Royal George Hotel is a beer lover’s haven. Here, you can taste your way through a rotating selection of 16 local and international tap beers. And don’t expect 16 same-y pale ales or IPAs – the owners are more discerning than that.

For example: one winter the pub was pouring Lizard of Koz, a bourbon-barrel-aged imperial stout all the way from Founders Brewing Co. in Michigan. It secured one of just nine Australian kegs. Local suppliers such as Tooborac Brewery and Castlemaine Brewing Company are also well represented.

The menu features hearty yet refined dishes. There’s 12-hour lamb shoulder and Thai red duck curry for mains, plus a selection of salads and cheese plates. Pub classics such as the parma and steak sanga are also on offer and benefit from local produce.

Take a walk around the hotel to discover many seating options, such as the outdoor courtyard, upstairs balcony, pool room and separate dining rooms. In winter, position yourself in front of an open fire for extra cosiness.
