Next time you’re on your way to Wodonga, consider taking a detour off the Hume and passing through the historic town of Chiltern. It’s a calm and beautiful town with plenty of things to do.

Posh Plonk is one place we recommend. It’s in the old masonic hall, which is over a 100 years old, and it’s the cellar door for Posh Plonk, a boutique winery based out of Bethanga – at the top-end of Victoria’s section of the Murray.

The brick building has been renovated to recapture its turn-of-the-century country ambiance, and includes private tasting and dining rooms, separate function space and private pods out the back to ensure social distancing.

There’s an acre of land out back to enjoy, too, with giant Jenga and badminton usually set up and ready to go. It’s a great spot to pull out the football and have a kick to stretch the legs, especially if you’ve been cooped up in the car all day.

A cellar door experience brings tastings to your table. All the fruit that goes into the wine produced by Posh Plonk’s winery at Rutherglen is sourced from within 100 kilometres. There are five varietals to taste: a classic Rutherglen durif, a fruit-driven shiraz, a pinot grigio made from grapes from the nearby King Valley, and a French-style rosé made with a blend of shiraz and sangiovese. On the beer front there’s a Posh Pale, a collaboration with Beechworth’s Bridge Road Brewers.

You can order from full a la carte menu, including gourmet pizzas, but our pick is one of the locally-produced platters. Like the wine, everything on the food menu here comes from within 100 kilometres of where it was grown or produced.
