For those unfamiliar with mythological Norse god Thor, Mjølner is the name of his hammer, and it’s about to get a second bar in Australia named after it. The Speakeasy Group, owner of bars across Melbourne and Sydney including Eau De Vie, The Roosevelt and Boilermaker House, is giving its latest Sydney venture, Mjølner, a Melbourne location.
Melbourne’s version will mostly be a faithful re-creation of its predecessor, where a small menu centres around rotisserie-cooked meat and there’s an extensive whisky and cocktail selection. The main menu will follow the same daily rotation of mains: a bird, a fish, meat and veg.
The group has purchased the CBD space that previously housed cocktail bar Nieuw Amsterdam. The bar will be much bigger than Sydney’s Mjølner. Owner Sven Almenning says the look will otherwise be much the same – a Scandinavian style, Viking-inspired den home to Thor, to be precise. The design is by Studio Y, the same team behind Boilermaker House.
“When we opened Eau De Vie Melbourne, we carried over most of our design elements and everything from Sydney. It’s the same brand so we want it to look and feel the same,” Almenning says.
Due to Melbourne’s more flexible licensing laws, the venue will trade until 3am most days, as opposed to Sydney’s midnight close. “Melbourne is way cooler when it comes to partying, so we get to stay open much later,” Almenning says.
The kitchen will stay open late as well, with a small menu of bar snacks and charcuterie. The standard selection of cured meats, cheeses, bone marrow and gravlax will feature, as well as the not-so-standard trencher – a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with the trimmings of whatever meat is being carved that week.
