Handpicked Wines owns vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula, in the Yarra Valley, Barossa Valley, Margaret River, Tasmania, Central Otago and Italy. With that many plots spread across that many regions, the traditional cellar door approach (where a winery has a retail shop at its vineyard) didn't seem like the best fit. Instead, Handpicked plants cellar doors in cities to showcase its wares.

Its Melbourne cellar door, at the base of the 80 Collins building, is the Victorian headquarters for all things Handpicked. It's a sleek space with clean lines and timber accents and shelving throughout. It's open daily with some pretty generous trading hours, which means there's ample opportunity to drop in for a sommelier-led tasting whenever you like. The cellar door also accepts bookings for large groups.

In addition to the retail and tasting component, Handpicked's urban cellar door is a good wine bar. Cheese and charcuterie pairings are available with wines by the glass, and there's a cosy lounging area – separate from the tasting bar – that encourages lingering.
