Walking through Gum’s door, you’ll probably feel immediately at ease. A somehow-familiar ’70s-inspired fit-out by Brunswick designer Bianca Sciuto includes kitsch floral wallpaper, bright-orange tabletops and retro lampshades. It gives off a homey vibe that might remind you of a childhood visit to your nan’s house.
But the menu might make you feel like you’re talking to a cheeky and bad-mouthed uncle. Cocktails include the Mango Mate, which combines Okar Gold liqueur and ginger ale served in a XXXX Gold can, and the For Fuck’s Sake, a vodka saké number that riffs on classic pub jugs. A bunch of Australian tinnies and vinos are on rotation and food specials also appear periodically.
13-inch pizzas are available Wednesday through Saturday from fellow Johnston Street local Thin Slizzy. There are meaty, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, all sporting punny names referencing ’70s rock and other nostalgic pop culture. A brief snack menu is available for smaller appetites, listing BBQ Shapes, pickles, nuts and olives.
Owners Chris Wright and Jonathan Reisacher have spent most of their adult lives gigging, producing music, and, crucially, drinking around town. This long-time connection to the city’s nightlife meant they were well-placed to open a spot of their own. The vibes are always high at Gum, with DJs on duty more often than not.
