Features
When Kiwi Anthony Brem first arrived in Australia, cheap all-day cafes were everywhere. Then somewhere during his 15-year hospitality career, we all went back to being morning people, obsessed with coffee and smashed avocado.
Archie’s All Day turns back the clock, but adds a level of refinement foreign to those early 2000s cafes. Here, you can have a burger at 10am, or pop in for a wine or tap beer later in the day. It’s the total package. We’d expect nothing less from the man who set up Bluebird Espresso and Orange in Windsor (both since sold).
Brem and chef Nick Sawle were excited to find the rare, bluestone building (previously Southpaw). They fitted it out anew, naming it after Brem’s son Archer and opening in 2016. There’s a turntable and a courtyard out back. As the name suggests, this is a place at which you can easily spend hours.
Sawle’s menu is wildly diverse, covering za’atar eggs, huevos sucio and Sichuan mapo tofu. It offers good options for vegetarians and vegans, and a decent amount of gluten-free options. Small dishes, snacks, cheeses and cakes keep you going until after dinner and there are $10 Negronis all day, every day.
