The American Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Echuca. But after a flashy refurbishment and extension, it’s anything but sleepy. Elements of the building’s old charm have been maintained, including the original facade. There’s a new outdoor beer garden and a feature staircase that spirals up to the rooftop, where you can watch the sun turn the streetscape pink at dusk.

As the name suggests, the menu has an American bent. Burgers, tacos, wings and poutine are all present, as are dishes direct from the smoker, such as pecan-smoked ham with grits and wine barrel-smoked lamb with couscous.

Larger dishes range from classic counter meals, such as fish’n’chips and hefty parmas, to burgers and house-made pizzas. If you’re in the mood for something a little less diner-style, you might go for the Tasmanian salmon with miso, wakame and oyster mushrooms.

The hotel keeps an extensive range of local and imported beers on tap and in bottles, including brews by Tooborac, Bridge Road, and Echuca’s own Bandicoot and 1710 Brew Co.
