American Hotel is the oldest hotel in Echuca. But after a flashy refurbishment and extension, it’s anything but sleepy. Elements of the building’s old charm have been maintained, including the original facade. There’s a new outdoor beer garden, and a feature staircase that spirals up to the rooftop, where you can watch the sun turn the streetscape pink at dusk.
As the name suggests, the menu has an American bent. Nachos, tacos, meatballs, wings and chilli fries are the snack plates across lunch and dinner.
Larger dishes range from classic counter meals such as fish and chips and hefty parmas, to burgers and house-made pizzas. If you’re in the mood for something a little less diner-style, there’s double-cooked duck with roasted daikon, braised shiitake, asparagus, beetroot puree and star anise jus. And the Kansas-style pork ribs with tomato and molasses glaze; dukkah carrots; roasted potatoes; and grilled corn.
The hotel offers a large range of local and imported beers and ciders on tap and in bottles, including beers from Tooborac, Beechworth and the local Bandicoot range. Brooklyn Lager and Sierra Nevada match the American theme.
