Dining in this quaint little bakery takes you back to a fiftees family kitchen where Formica tables, lace dollies and a lemon vintage dresser sweep you up in the memory of childhood tea parties and nostalgic granny chic.

But it’s not heavy, cream-laden or thickly iced cakes that you’ll find at Crumbs. Rather, owners Gerald and Marion have a more modern, specialist approach to their in-house baking, lining their wooden racks with organic breads, gluten-free cakes and vegan pizza slices, and subsequently providing a tantalising, self-made window display.

The slightly aging interior is hardly a quandary, as the imperfections only work to endear and make you wholesomely believe that your Casalinga loaf or vegan muffin has been made with a big helping of love and expertise. And if you really want a newer decor, the second store in North Melbourne has the same vibe without the actual age.

Already supplying many Melbourne cafes with their gluten-free slices, organic breads and sugar-free cakes, it may be time to make a visit to the bakehouse itself. If not for the smell of freshly baked goods, then to delight in a vegan sourdough doughnut filled with lemon curd, jam or simply dusted with cinnamon.
