The cluey cats behind new cafe and gallery, 1000 £ Bend in Lonsdale Street, are opening The Speakeasy Cinema together with sponsorship from independent film distribution company, Madman. The idea is to run the cinema above the cafe and bring some interesting documentaries and indie titles to a big screen. You’ll be able to have a drink and a feed in front of films that would otherwise go unnoticed… watch Beautiful Losers, the portrait of New York nerds-turned art culture icons, Obscene: A Portrait of Barney Rosset and Grove Press, or The Universe of Keith Haring – an intimate portrait of the internationally renowned artist. Keep an eye on the website (or sign up to the newsletter) to keep on top of program updates; they’re sure to surprise.

And, during Anode (a collection of art events running until December 5), the best deal here is film, glass of wine or beer, and a roo or saganaki burger for a total of $20 (pre-sale). Not bad.

Speakeasy opens on October 30 (with a screening of Beautiful Losers).
