Mark Trzopek and Dana Rogers are two graphic designers not content to be chained to their computers. So the couple have set up shop for a ceramics side project by the name of Weak End Club. “Before we knew what it was going to be we decided on a name … the only time we could work on it was on the weekends,” says Trzopek.

The two started by playing around with clay around a campfire in the great outdoors, making bowls and pitchers. Rogers had taken community classes in ceramics and after teaching Trzopek, Weak End Club was born. They replaced the rented pottery wheel on the balcony of their apartment for a cosy, wooden workspace on the second floor of a shared Marrickville studio in Sydney. Flooded with natural light, and with makeshift shelving to hold their designs and mood boards, the small space is also a showroom for their creations. Dip-and-dripped pots and two-tone planters lay beside blue-dashed vases on display in the space, where the one-of-a-kind stoneware ceramics are crafted, moulded, glazed and stamped before being taken to the kiln.

The process takes the designers’ efforts from digital to analogue. “We’re both in front of the computer all day, so we like making things with our hands,” says Trzopek. Evidently, it’s not just the couple getting enjoyment out of Weak End Club. They were in the Vanishing Elephant store on a Sunday, dreaming of having their pieces stocked there, only to be contacted the next day to make a line for the store. With orders coming from other labels, the pair quickly turned long-term goals into next-day projects. Despite the ensuing whirlwind, the couple agree, “There was no way we were going to pass it up,” says Trzopek.

Weak End Club hopes to expand to other homewares including lampshades, prints, and soft furnishings, as well as dabble in woodwork. Stay posted for a new line of candles in ceramic vessels, made for use long after the wax burns. “We want to make things you can keep,” says Trzopek.

Weak End Club is currently stocked on the label’s website, as well as in store at Vanishing Elephant in Melbourne and Bondi, and online at Assembly Label.
