MACK Books, a London-based publisher, describes its province in six words: “Books with artists, writers and curators.” While this is true, it’s a bit of an understatement.

According to Dan Rule, the co-founder of Melbourne’s art-focused bookstore, publishing house and distributor, Perimeter Books, MACK has “established itself, in a short amount of time, as the key contemporary photography publisher of the current generation.”

In the maiden installment of a series of publisher showcases at the CCP + Perimeter Shop in Fitzroy, the bookstore of the Contemporary Centre for Photography, the entire MACK catalogue will be on display– and for sale – for the first time in Australia.

The program highlights art and photography publishers at the vanguard of the industry, to encourage viewers and readers to experience books in a more holistic way, instead of consuming each volume as a discrete and unrelated work.

The showcase will give visitors “a sense of the publisher’s work as an oeuvre; a sense of their practice and vision,” says Rule.

MACK’s strength lies in publishing the work of illustrious photographers including Thomas Demand and Taryn Simon, alongside “books of the same magnitude on young, unknown artists,” Rule says. “It’s a really interesting, democratising process.”

Alongside the full range of MACK publications, a series of original MACK posters featuring the work of reknowned lensman and women such as Roe Ethridge and Collier Schorr will be on sale. And Rule and Daniel Boetker-Smith, director of the Asia-Pacific Photobook Archive, will be on hand at the opening for a discussion on MACK and the photobook business in general.

Lest you think it’s all heavy going, Rule points out that the launch, at heart, will “be a bunch of books; a bunch of drinks.”

The MACK showcase opens Thursday June 26 from 6pm–8pm and runs until Sunday July 13.
