The latest ‘long-term pop-up’ to appear in Melbourne comes in the form of Lark, which is bringing a burst of fun and colour to Gertrude Street for a six-month stint. Originally harking from Daylesford, the store offers a huge range of quirky home and kitchenwares, gardening tools, toys and party goods.
When you first walk in, it’s difficult to choose which area of the store to be dazzled by first. There’s a mint green vintage bicycle in the front, the store’s name spelled out in huge gold glittering letters up the back, and a kaleidoscope of colour on the shelves in between.
Essentially, Lark is a toy store for adults. You’ll find plenty to play with, ranging from polka dot sun beds to floral bicycle seat covers and Skipping Girl Vinegar tin lunch boxes. A whole wall is dedicated to party favours and decorations with huge confetti poppers, party hats and cupcake toppers. For the gardeners, there are brightly coloured pots and duck-shaped watering cans. Cookie cutters and three-tiered cake platters are provided for baking enthusiasts and there’s a huge range of old school shaving accessories by The Gentlemen’s Hardware.
Owned and operated by Allison Jones, the store was designed in collaboration with local illustrator Laura Blythman, who will be rolling out a series of visual concepts the coming months to compliment the ever-evolving stock. The Melbourne pop-up is open until February before going on the road again.
