When you consider digestion, you may think of gurgling stomachs, burps and sated appetites. But an exhibition entitled In + Out by St Kilda’s Project QUAD (an acronym for quick and dirty), promises to turn the intimate workings of the body inside out. In + Out opens this weekend and focuses on what happens in the body between the beginning and the end of eating … consumption, digestion, decomposition, dispatch.

In association with St Kilda’s Bar Di Stasio, and set to launch this Sunday during the St Kilda Festival in Brightspace Gallery, this exhibition by emerging local artists has been curated by QUAD co-founders, arts publicist Stephanie Pirrie and sculptor Maddie Sharrock. The theme of digestion is being interpreted by 12 local artists across various mediums such as painting, video art, photography and sculpture.

“It could be about the body,” says Pirrie of the exhibition’s theme. “The intestines are interesting in themselves … but digestion can also be interpreted to mean gut instinct, systems, emotions.”

A quiet coup for QUAD is the patronage of restaurateur Ronnie Di Stasio of Bar Di Stasio on Fitzroy Street who is supporting the project.

Di Stasio, a long-time supporter of the arts and the founder of the 2008 Di Stasio Ideas Competition to design a new Australian pavilion at the Venice Biennale, hasn't supported a local exhibition of this ilk before. So putting his weight behind In + Out means a lot to him and the local collective. "I've supported international and national events in the past, says Di Stasio. “[But] It's important to support up-and-coming artists in your own community, and the calibre of this work is exciting."

The artists chosen by QUAD for the project are ACAB Collective, Emma Barrett, Leon Buynevic, Colby Cannon, Ben Carollo, Nathan Ceddia, Ian Haig, Mimi Leung, Ilya Milstein, Ian Haig, Rachel Prince and Isobel Stuart and Sukoe; plus performance artists Eric Demetriou and Jacqui Moore.

In & Out will open Sunday 9 February and run until Sunday 16 February.
