In 1989, we met a pearlescent princess named Ariel whose main interests were ‘Dinglehoppers’ (also known as forks), her best friend Flounder (who happened to be a talking fish) and those strange creatures who walked on land (this did cause her to make a deal with an evil sea witch, but look, it worked out in the end).

To celebrate The Little Mermaid’s 30th, Broadsheet and Disney are throwing a glittering party worthy of Ariel’s grotto of treasures. On September 8, we’re hosting an intimate afternoon of craft, delicious drinks and treats with artist and self-professed tinsel maven Rachel Burke.

We’ll deck out The Balcony at The Espy in St Kilda and invite 30 people under the sea to take part in the ultimate crafternoon. Burke will guide guests through decorating their own Twoobs sandals to take home, with snacks and drinks by The Espy. The Brisbane-based artist is renowned for her extravagant tinsel jackets, dresses and skirts, recently creating a Little Mermaid-themed capsule collection in partnership with Disney. You can check that out here or see them on display at Hamer Hall at the Arts Centre Melbourne on September 6 and 7.
