“The store was an accident … sort of,” says Zane Curwen-Walker.
He’s talking about his one-man operation Ours, which you’ll find behind a striking cobalt-brick facade on Fitzroy’s Johnston Street. The chic new art and design shopfront champions local makers and includes a gallery space as well as an upstairs Airbnb.
After successfully running an Airbnb in Hepburn Springs – and trying his hand at furniture-making – Curwen-Walker cultivated a number of connections within Melbourne’s creative industry. “Whenever you go through Instagram, you see these beautifully curated rooms … I wanted to open another Airbnb [in Melbourne] that could showcase all of these things from local furniture makers, designers and artists.”

SHOP NOWThe downstairs store and gallery space is filled with vibrant, eye-popping pieces from Australian labels. You might find statement furniture by Billy and Monde, eccentric made-to-order homewares courtesy of Objects by Kit, a number of colourful objects curated by Brunswick’s Pogo Store, and a whole lot more.
Upstairs, the sunny one-bedroom apartment is the stuff inner-north interior-design dreams are made of. It’s a snug space, but it’s filled with pieces from some of the same artists and designers showcased downstairs, and it’s similarly defined by exposed brick and concrete, and rustic timber floorboards. “It’s evolving,” Curwen-Walker says, but it’s all about “unashamedly showing off [wares from] our own backyard”.
The apartment can also be booked for photoshoots or small-scale events.
