For three short weeks we welcome the return of Modern Times Pop-Up Shop, this time emerging on the north side of the city in a vacant shop in Collingwood. Following their original concept to provide high-quality, mid-century Danish furniture, owners Amy and Joel Malin wanted to take on a slightly different approach the second time around.

As well as delivering the furniture goods, Modern Times has decided to showcase 30 different local artists and designers who they felt best complimented the modernist style. “The art and homewares were so well received last time I thought it was worth focusing on it more,” explains Amy. “People just loved the fact that there are talented local designers creating pieces that sit at home with the mid-century, modern aesthetic.”

Artworks include Ellie Malin's delectable colour fields, made from lino-cut prints, alongside bright pieces by Beci Orpin, whose patchwork designs and invented characters add a freshness to the sterner designer pieces. Emily Green's quaint, handmade jewellery also features, well paired and presented inside Scandinavian-inspired ceramics by Christopher Plumridge. The vibrancy of the artworks does make for an optimistic re-positioning of unique pieces like the Safari Chair by Kaare Klint, or even the Spanish Chair by Danish giant Borge Mogenson.

Modern Times Pop-Up Shop 2 opens tomorrow (December 10) and runs until New Year’s Eve (December 31, 2011).
