In a time when almost everything comes with a Made In China stamp, Pierre and Charlotte Julien are going against the grain quite literally with their handcrafted furniture and lighting.
Meeting in Tokyo in the early 80s, the pair seemed destined to travel and create together. After shortly settling in Pierre’s hometown of Paris, the couple’s interest and talent in art and design eventually led them back to Charlotte’s home of Australia, where there were bigger and better opportunities.
Back in Melbourne and wanting to create an artistic life together, Pierre and Charlotte used their experience with art, music and fashion to develop an understanding of furniture and lighting design. While neither are formally trained, their pieces are both lovely and practical while remaining loyal to their mission: to design and make pieces that hold integrity and quality. Using environmentally conscious materials, each piece is designed to last a lifetime.
Now, 15 years later, they have established a group of local artists who collaborate to create an extensive range of pieces that fit a clientele who appreciate the quality, longevity and practicality of their work.
Tucked away in the back streets of North Melbourne just behind Auction Rooms cafe, Pierre and Charlotte are now opening their showroom up to the public from 10-4pm on Saturdays (it was previously trade only and did not have a street frontage shop). The space has been created to feel warm and welcoming with the smell of freshly cut timber and natural oils used to stain them.
