There’s a lot that can be said for knitting. Whether it’s done to switch off, to keep the hands busy or to help cultivate a fuzzy wardrobe, we usually pick up a pair of knitting needles to bring comfort and even a little satisfaction to our lives. Then again, it’s hard to get anywhere when scratchy acrylic yarns and a shaky knowledge of how to actually knit (let alone crochet) is all you’ve got. That’s where Yarn + Co comes in.

The project of mother and daughter duo and craft connoisseurs Chris Hughes and Karen Voelske, Yarn + Co is a paradise for knitting pros and amateurs alike. Ceiling-high shelves greet you upon entering, neatly packed with pattern books, needles, buttons and every shade of baby-soft wool imaginable. The emphasis is on Australian brands with three international yarns currently on offer, one of which is hand-spun by another mother and daughter duo in the United States.

If it seems a little overwhelming, Chris and Karen will happily share their vast knowledge to help you get your project started. Their enthusiasm isn’t surprising. They both broke away from the nine-to-five slog (Chris worked in IT and Karen as an architect) to make their Yarn + Co dream a reality. They are keen for their store to take an educational approach, starting with knitting workshops for all levels of prowess. Held in store, the sessions are intimate and the reasonable prices are inclusive of all materials required to bring your dream scarf (or crocheted bikini) to life.

Those who love knitting with a side of chitchat will be thrilled with the launch of a high tea service from February 25. Things will get even better when functions (presumably catering for everything from birthdays to baby showers) kick off in mid-2013, featuring the creation of a patchwork quilt to which every guest contributes a square knitted at the party.

In the meantime, visit the store and get cracking – winter is approaching and you can never have enough woolly knits!
