Café Di Stasio turns 25 this year and this milestone coincides with the Renaissance exhibition showing at Canberra’s National Gallery of Australia.

Now in its third decade, this long-time Melbourne favourite has collected quite a history and become almost a pilgrimage for lovers of fine Italian food in Melbourne.

Di Stasio’s namesake is its owner, Ronnie Di Stasio, who is at the forefront of this dramatic dining experience. This, together with Di Stasio’s dedication to celebrating the connection between Italy and Australia, makes his appointment as the Renaissance exhibition’s Melbourne patron quite an honour.

The exhibition, which arrives from the collection of the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo in northern Italy, features more than 70 works from painters working in the Early and High Renaissance – the years of 1400 to 1600 – including Raphael, Botticelli, Bellini and Titian.

As something of a celebration by the exhibition’s patron, this month sees a Renaissance-inspired menu at Café Di Stasio, with dishes such as figs baked with gorgonzola and prosciutto, pasta with chicken livers, roast suckling pig and duck braised in red wine, accompanied for dessert with strawberry and mint jelly with mascarpone cream.

It’s the decadence of art and dining all wrapped up in the traditional Di Stasio experience.
