The National Architecture Awards recognise some of the most innovative recent architecture projects in the country. The 2017 shortlist has just been announced, and Victorian projects feature heavily.

The awards cover 13 categories including residential, educational, heritage-listed buildings and public institutions, among others.

Yarra Valley winery TarraWarra is among the finalists, with its Cellar Door designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects shortlisted in the commercial architecture section. The new tasting room is built into the hillside, with a dramatic concave entrance made of wood and brick.

A new Melbourne office for Slack – the instant messenger company – is a finalist in the interior architecture category. Breathe Architecture’s design features slick wood panelling and abundant indoor plants.

At The Albert Park College Environmental Arts Hub two historic buildings have been transformed by Six Degrees Architects into what is now a grand unified learning space and cafe, featuring original timber floors and an impressive timber staircase.
