1. Open from 7.30am, Station Street Trading Co. is an excellent place to start your Port Melbourne adventures, with breakfast of egg and bacon rolls and a sharp latte. Established by the guys behind of Coin Laundry, you know you’re in safe hands dining at this popular corner cafe.

  2. Take a wonder down Bay Street and explore some of the stores on the main drag. Miishu, Lacquer, Diva Scandinavia and Gloss Boutique are just a few you’ll come across.

  3. Don’t leave Bay Street without checking out MARS Gallery. Their 2013 proceedings kick off with an exciting exhibition dubbed Paper Nights, which features the work of Australia’s top paper artists. The exhibition launches on Wednesday February 6 and closes on Sunday March 3.

  • If you’re feeling a little peckish after all that cultural and retail therapy, Rose Diner and Bar is the spot for lunch. Eat oysters, vol-au-vents, share plates of seafood and drink summer punch.

  • Going to the local bowls club might often be more about the cheap beer, but the Port Melbourne Bowling Club is certainly one of the finer ways to spend an afternoon in this suburb. You don’t need to know the rules – you just need to take your shoes off. We advise booking in advance.

  • Post bowls, head to the beach for a stroll down to Princes Pier. We’re sure only the locals know to venture that far because the main car park and barbecue facilities are further west, but the sand is much softer and the beach cleaner at the Princes Pier section, so it’s well worth the trek.

  • And as night closes in, it’s time to head to our last stop: Dalmatino. Brothers Natko and Ino Kuvacic run this family owned eatery, which serves up unique Croatian takes on favourite European dishes. Try the ‘pod pekom’, a traditional Croatian baked dish with whole octopus or stuffed calamari and potato, drink some wine and you’ve got yourself the perfect end to a leisurely Saturday in this bayside suburb.
