How do you install a shadow? How can a space be reimagined? And what new stories can you tell about one of the most recognisable artists of the 20th-century?

These were just some of the challenges faced by the NGV’s curatorial and technical teams ahead of its current blockbuster exhibition, Escher X Nendo. Tasked with presenting a labyrinthian journey through the works of Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher, the gallery worked with Japanese design studio Nendo to create a fantastical series of corridors, ramps, and site-specific artworks to showcase the printmaker’s dazzlingly complex creations.

We caught up with NGV senior curator Cathy Leahy and the exhibition’s former senior designer Peter King to discuss the thematic concept behind the collaboration, the build itself, and their personal highlights from the exhibition.

Between Two Worlds | Escher X Nendo is at NGV International until April 7.
